Nerodia fasciata, 28 May 2013

Nerodia fasciata, the Banded watersnake;
Lowndes county, Georgia (28 May 2013).
NOTE: I largely dodge subspecies distinctions on south Georgia banded watersnakes because I can’t really distinguish between the two subspecies in that region (just north of the Florida border) with consistency and confidence. This is a generalized zone of intergradation between the Florida subspecies (Nerodia fasciata pictiventris) and the Southern subspecies (Nerodia fasciata fasciata). If I had to pick between the two, I’d say Southern, but —for the most part— I don’t put much stock into subspecies designations to begin with.
